Vendimia 2018 - Bodegas Manzanos

After many weeks since we began harvesting our red varieties, we can confirm our initial expectations regarding quality parameters: the harvest will be excellent in terms of quantity and quality.

We are very happy even though we have suffered a lot during the winter and spring because of intense rains, some of them accompanied by hail, especially in high areas of our vineyards in Rioja Alavesa, which thanks to the hard work of our technical team and field crew, have been corrected with excellent results. The care of the vines is a fundamental aspect for Bodegas Manzanos as our philosophy is “80% of the wine is already made when the grapes enter the winery”.

Today, the field team has grown by about 20 people compared to the usual team due to the special circumstances in which we harvest, as we carry out a “very selective” harvest depending on the optimum ripeness of each vineyard, which it involves that there are some of the days that we harvest on different plots simultaneously. Last week, we finished harvesting manually our emblematic vineyard called “El Barranco”, it is a 6 hectare vineyard planted in bush of Graciano variety, being the oldest Graciano vineyard in the world since 1940. Graciano is a variety that the winery firmly bet for.

Vendimia 2018 Calidad Excelente

Regarding the vineyards of the Rioja Alta area, (950 hectares between own and controlled in the DOCa Rioja) Borja Ripa, technical director, confirms that the harvest of the red varieties began in the second half of October and finished last Friday 26th October. We have finished 15 days later than any other year. As we mentioned at the beginning, 2018 vintage in Bodegas Manzanos will achieve excellent quality to produce the best wines and continue with the tradition inherited by the 5th generation of the Fernández de Manzanos family for more than 128 years.
