Although she was born in Murcia,\u00a0<\/span>Laura Mateo<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0defines herself as Navarrese by adoption.\u00a0After finishing her studies in\u00a0<\/span>London<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, she came to the\u00a0<\/span>Autonomous Community<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0to work hand in hand with her husband,\u00a0<\/span>V\u00edctor Fern\u00e1ndez de Manzanos<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, in her family winery:\u00a0<\/span>Bodegas Manzanos<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0.\u00a0\u201cWe took over management when her father died in 2010. Then we were eleven workers and now we are 150,\u201d Mateo details.<\/span><\/p>\n

The couple met in the\u00a0<\/span>United Kingdom<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, but returned home to assume leadership of the firm.\u00a0It was a new beginning, in which they decided to reformulate the business.\u00a0\u201cHis father made the wines, and we had a different training.\u00a0\u201cWe decided to transform the company to sell added value and go into foreign markets,\u201d they explain.<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, its products are sold in seventy countries, although some have a greater sales volume.\u00a0\u201cFor example, we have clients in\u00a0<\/span>Bhutan<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, although they are not very numerous.\u00a0My husband did an internship at one of the export companies we worked with.\u00a0So, when I started working at the winery, we became export salespeople and traveled around the world,\u201d Mateo recalls.<\/span><\/p>\n

After seeing the scope they were achieving, in 2016 they decided to hire a person to carry out this work specifically.\u00a0\u201cWe continued with this sales strategy until the pandemic, when the borders were closed.\u00a0<\/span>Europe<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Asia<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0had more restrictions, and the United States was a market in which there was a lot of potential to develop.\u00a0So we decided to move with our two children to explore the continent,\u201d says the couple.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, Mateo and Fern\u00e1ndez reside in Miami.\u00a0In fact, at the time this interview was conducted they were in the warehouse finalizing details before returning to North American territory: \u201cThese are days of packing suitcases and getting everything ready, the course begins there now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Once installed on American soil, they formed a larger sales team and visited all the States to show their genre.\u00a0\u201cWe wanted to promote sales in the United States.\u00a0And we chose Miami strategically.\u00a0Now we are a team of ten people: three Spanish and seven North American.\u00a0We have been growing,\u201d they point out.<\/span><\/p>\n

When they decided to undertake this adventure, they also joined the\u00a0<\/span>Spain-US Chamber of Commerce<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0, an organization that recently communicated very exciting news to them.\u00a0\u201cThey have elected me as a director of the corporation in Miami for the period 2023 \/ 2026. So I feel super happy.\u00a0We have only been in Miami for three years and we are not yet such a recognized company.\u00a0But I was the ninth person with the most votes among 42 candidates,\u201d highlights the director.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mateo leads the\u00a0<\/span>Marketing<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Human Resources<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0areas within the winery and is confident that, through his new position, he can also help other companies that want to enhance their internationalization: \u201cWe advise entrepreneurs, businessmen, managers\u2026 From the Chamber We represent Spanish companies that intend to grow here.\u00a0My job will be to ensure proper functioning and management.\u00a0In short, everything necessary to help firms grow within the American market.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

THE EVOLUTION OF THE WINERY<\/span><\/h3>\n

Now, Mateo and Fern\u00e1ndez de Manzanos are more focused on growing in value.\u00a0\u201cWe do not enter into price wars, since we are within the medium-high level Navarrese wines.\u00a0In the United States, in fact, we sell the highest ranges.\u00a0The quality-price relationship between our genre and our direct competitors, which are usually California wines, allows us to do many more promotional actions.\u00a0And this also gives a positioning to the DO Navarra brand,\u201d they both defend.\u00a0Its best-selling reference in North America is Manzanos Reserva, while in Spain it is the Crianzas.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSince we settled in Miami, many friends from Mexico and the United States have come to visit us in Navarra to get to know the region,\u201d they point out.\u00a0In the distance, inevitably, there are things that are missed.\u00a0\u201cI am more acclimatized to Navarra than to Murcia.\u00a0In fact, my family comes here to visit us when we return from the United States.\u00a0What we miss most is food.\u00a0Although there are also good options there, we love Navarrese gastronomy,\u201d they remark.<\/span><\/p>\n
